Book Review; The White Tiger

– Aravind Adiga

Harper Collins; Rs. 350

Difficult to categorise this novel in a particular genre, The White Tiger won Man Booker Prize for Adiga, at the age of 33.

I’ll begin quoting the review from the telegraph which appears on the cover page of Harper Collins edition, ‘Blazingly Savage and Brilliant’.

Yeah, it’s true. Out of all books which I have read till now, this one is unique due to its scathing attack on the hegemony and the system of caste rooted in Indian society. The language is infused with dark humour, which is slightly unacceptable to the person who is a staunch supporter of government or religion.

The tale tells the gripping story of a low caste born, Balram and his quest to break away from the shackles of the odious job which has been set by society for him which he repeatedly calls it as ‘Rooster Coop’. The novel arouse controversy due to Adiga’s ruthless language and imagery which it invokes.

A movie based on this novel was released in Jan, 2021 starring Priyanka Chopra as Pinky Madam, Rajkumar Rao as Mr. Ashok and Adarsh Gaurav as Balram Halwai. Though it represents the novel briefly, I am glad that it doesn’t change the plot of the novel unlike other which does it to attract the audience.

You’ll get it at a price starting at Rs. 150 or more through street vendors across India.
