A Rainy Prelude to Winter

How do you perceive the weather? Does it actually determine our mood, or is it our state of mind that defines it?

When I woke up in the morning, I could hear some sounds, continuous but irregular, feeble yet audible. I felt the need to reduce the fan speed, which I did while lying down since the regulator was nearby. I could feel a mild shivering kind of sensation in my body. I looked around for a comforter to cover myself. However, I realised that it is still packed with winter clothes. I touched my feet, which were frostier than usual. Had it been an ordinary day, I would have stayed in my bed for a longer time, given that it was already a weekend. But waking to a different environment, unlike the one I slept in at night, made me curious.

I’ve this habit of asking people that ‘what do they like doing the most in this weather.’ Among several responses, the majority say they would like to sleep. I always wonder how you would take cognisance of the weather if you were to fall asleep? Hence, to observe this change in the surroundings, I stood straight, grabbed my spectacles and dragged the door to the balcony. A sudden gush of air patted on my body. I felt an instant quiver in the parts of the body that were directly exposed to the surroundings for a while. The sound became more audible since it was supplemented by another sense: eyesight. I saw innumerable droplets of different textures dripping slowly, some onto the leaves of the trees, while others fell directly to the ground. The droplets that caress the stems and leaves of the trees left a part of themselves there to embrace the earth, their ultimate destination. It led me to probe their origin. Where are they coming from? They must be from heaven. How much distance they might have travelled? Did each of them made their way the ground? Or some sacrificed themselves during the journey? What’s the purpose of their journey? Is it to give us life? To pacify us? To rejuvenate us? To inspire us? While I was engrossed in these thoughts, the intensity of rain and sound increased but still limited to drizzle. There was a kind of rhythm in their song. As is a song is accompanied by music.

The drizzle continued throughout the day at the same pace. The droplets kept purifying the surroundings. The body kept shivering so much so that I had to turn the fan off. In the evening, I came to one of the cafes to relish the rain in its purest form, which came in the form of words in this post.

Looks like winter is at the threshold!
